When A Vegetarian Craves A Deli Sandwich

Image
When a vegetarian craves a deli sandwich their minds go to heart health, a splash of flavor, and plenty of greens without apology.  What is it about sandwiches that we just can't give up?  The simplicity? The mixture of flavors?  The bread? The undying memories of your childhood deli?  Perhaps all.  Here is a simple heart healthy, vegetarian friendly recipe for my favorite sandwich.  Some of the choices are not specifically whole foods...they are a healthier version of a traditional deli sandwich, which is all about heart health. First, the bread: as one who rarely consumes bread, discovering a decent vegan bread is a necessity.  Whenever the craving strikes, Franz Organic Rogue River Twenty-Four Grains & Seeds is the go to bread.  If gluten-free is required, go to your favorite GF bread.   Second, the flavor:  homemade raw vegan pesto is an ABSOLUTE requirement!  The garlic, basil, pine nuts, and olive oil provide an in...

Oakland Coffee Brings 100% Compostable Single-Serve Cups to Life

Image
On my last trip to Newport Beach, my husband and I could not believe all the plastic, single-serve cups strewn along the shore.  I never liked the idea of single-serve cups to begin with due the waste factor, so one can imagine my utter joy to find Oakland Coffee's 100% compostable cups at the 2017 Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim.  The lovely women at the booth gave me a couple of samples, which I tried it at the hotel the following morning...good, strong single-serving of organic coffee.  After I finished my coffee, I placed the used coffee grounds compostable cups in a bag, and fed them to my garden when I returned home, literally, the best of both worlds.  Now, I just might buyh one of those single-serve coffee machines! https://oaklandcoffee.com/oakland-coffee-works/

One of my favorites is from the fabulous Young On Raw Food website, where Mimi Kirk demonstrates and lives a life of raw health and fun.  She graciously has shared several raw recipes to help the novice or expand an experienced vegan/vegetarian's recipe box.  Make and enjoy her delicious recipe for chia pudding - the perfect summer time treat. http://youngonrawfood.com/raw-chia-pudding-recipe/

Important Information About Chia Seeds

Image
Nearly everyone should add chia seeds to their diets.  I use them in my raw chia puddings, as well  as an egg replacement in baked recipes.  The link below provides some valuable information to determine if they will be healthy for you.  If you have the time and inclination you can grow and harvest your own chia seeds. http://nimbleful.hubpages.com/hub/Chia-Seeds-Benefits-and-Side-Effects Link to growing your own chia seed:  http://longtimemother.hubpages.com/hub/How-I-grow-and-harvest-organic-Chia

Don't Believe the Hype: Cancer Cure Myths

Image
The one thing everyone needs to know about cancer...it is mysterious.  Not only is every cancer unique in its methods of operation, but it is unique to each human being.  It seems the war on scientific, logical, and reasoned approaches to cancer treatment is suspect, but it is only suspect to those who live in fear (one way or another).  A diagnosis of cancer is scary, but it can be managed in a logical manner using an integrative approach.  The link below is simply a guide to use in order to avoid cancer myths that will not help your hope for a cancer cure.  Eat organic, eat those superfoods because they are a good source of nutrition, but don't believe they will cure cancer.  Eat well to support your body.  Don't believe the hype!   http://scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2014/03/24/dont-believe-the-hype-10-persistent-cancer-myths-debunked/

Epilepsy and the Ketogenic Diet: A Mini History

Image
There are so many ideas on eating a healthy diet that I like to provide a glimpse into all types of concepts and options available.  The Ketogenic Diet is a hot topic with its roots in the treatment of certain types of epilepsy.  On his blog, Robb Wolf, provides a mini history of the use of a Ketogenic Diet on patients suffering with epilepsy.  It is a good read to add to your dietary information arsenal.   Links to Part I & II below: Image via Robb Wolf website http://robbwolf.com/2015/09/24/the-origin-and-future-of-the-ketogenic-diet-part-1/ http://robbwolf.com/2015/09/30/the-origin-and-future-of-the-ketogenic-diet-part-2/

The Real Deal: A Certified Nutritionist with a Background in Authentic Research

Image
Accurate nutrition informatin is so critical to your health that one must receive it from a reliable source with an education that includes critical thinking and focused research skills. With all the online "health coaches" or "not really a degree holistic nutritionists" you need a true advocate who is learned in seeking out authentic, science-based studies to translate accurate information.  Check out Erika Herman, author and certified nutritionist (as well as UCLA educated in Writing and Literature), to  help enhance your health and nutrition knowledge.  She is an articulate, expressive, and enthusiastic nutrition educator, with a sense of humor, as you can see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjQK2adjqto

Best Tasting "Bottled" Organic Salad Dressing

Image
I always make my salad dressings from scratch, but while visiting a friend's house I was reduced to trying a "bottled" salad dressing.  Normally, I would forego the dressing and eat my salad along with the rest of the meal; HOWEVER, I was intrigued by the salad dressing brand.  I cautiously read the ingredients, not so bad, then I put a dab on my plate...shockingly good flavor.  It was a little sweet for me, as I NEVER add a sweetener to my dressings, yet this dressing was outstanding!  This very tasty "bottled" dressing is made by I Love Organic Girl...yes, the same company who consciously packages all of those organic greens also makes relatively clean salad dressings.  I tried the lemon agave, but they have several flavors available.  http://www.iloveorganicgirl.com/og/products/dressings/lemon_agave/
